Get Wise with Money

ASB came to Cockle Bay to teach us about money.  We call this Financial Literacy.   One of the things we did was a role play about EFPOS, and how you can use your own money to credit and debit your EFPOS card.

Wheels Day

On Wheels Day, everyone is allowed to bring something with wheels to play on at morning tea and lunchtime.  In Room 18, we brought bikes, scooters, remote controlled vehicles, wheelies and meeowsies.  As with the culture parade, Room 18 did Statistical Maths to find out how many people people had brought what.

A special thank you to our class councillors who made Wheels Day posters and also helped to supervise riders on the day.

The CBS Culture Parade

It is interesting to discover how many different ethnicities we have at Cockle Bay School.  Students come from a vast number of different countries.  To celebrate this, it was decided to have a Culture Parade.  Everyone, students and teachers, could come to school dressed in ways to demonstrate country.  After we had shared our cultures in our classrooms, the whole school had a parade around the filed before morning tea.

Later on, in Maths we did cultural statistics.  We collected our data, displayed on a bar chart as well as a pice chart, and then wrote sensible sentences about what we could see.

Happy Halloween

On 31st October, we celebrated Happy Halloween in Room 18: through Maths, Word Study, Art and Science.  Desk inspection was scary as everyone had cobwebs and spiders in their desks and tote trays!

The jack-o-lantern smelt like burnt pumpkin as the candle cooked the lid!

First we did Halloween Maths.  We had to join pairs of numbers that make 10, 100 or even 1,000 to make scary cobwebs.

Later on, we worked out Halloween word problems.  Some people worked independently using their multiplication and division skills,  while other people used counters in the Halloween workshop with Mrs Bear.

For lunch, we made spider sandwiches, but thankfully NOT with real spiders!  We used vegemite for the body, and either sticks of cucumber or carrot for the legs.  Then we used red food colouring for the eyes and mouth.

After lunch, we had Spooky Word Study with jelly googly eyes.  We had to write all the words we could think of with the 'OO' chunk.

Afterwards, we could choose one Halloween sweet from the Skull because no one really wanted to eat the googly eyes when they had felt pen all around the edge - there were jelly googly eyes, false teeth or cut off fingers to choose from.

We also did spooky Halloween Art, but this took several days.  First we looked very closely at our hands to see where the finger bones were.   We bent our finders, rotated our wrists and made a fist to see our knuckles.  Then we drew an outline of our hand, and made little lines to show each join.  Next we drew in each bone, separating them at each join and coloured in the spaces between.  The last part was to carefully paint the bones with oil to make them see-through.  When they were dry, we stuck them to the window.  When the light shines through, they look just like X-rays!

Later on, we did some Halloween Science and learned about physical change and chemical change.  We looked at all sorts of changes and decided in which group they belonged.  We  classified things like melting ice, mixing sand in water or chopping wood as physical change because they stayed the same, but we classified making toast and slime and baking cakes as chemical change because things changed and you could not change them back again.

At the end of the day, little groups of people went into the Halloween Cave with a glow stick - was this a physical change or a chemical change?  Can we change the glow stick back, or not?  We thought about this as we whirled them around in the dark.  What do you think?

Fractions of Shapes

We have been learning about the fractions of shapes.  The Fighter Jets and the Awesome Acrobatics  made and labelled their own fractions using foam fractions shapes.

Fraction Fruit Salad

In Room 18 we are learning about fractions.  To help us learn about fractions of shapes we made a fraction fruit salad.  Everyone brought different kinds of fruit, some small like blueberries and some big like rock melon.  Then we cut them into pieces.  We cut small fruit like grapes in half, but the bigger fruit were cut into many small pieces.  Some were not fractions of the fruit as they were not the same size.  Even so, when they were all mixed together, they tasted juicy and delicious.

We would like to thank the Mums and Dads who came to help us and supervised us using sharp knives.

Teddy is not keen on fruit salad, but enjoyed the company.

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths)

We changed the slope of the ramp using more, or less, Maths books

We have one STEM lesson a week in Maths, with a different theme each term.  In term 1 STEM (Science),  we measured and recorded length in metres and centimetres to see how far different balls and marbles travelled down a ramp, and made comparisons.  In term 2 STEM (Technology,) we measured quantities in grams to make different substances.  In  term 3 STEM (ICT), we are learning to use and read non-digital code.

Bookmarks

We all made a book mark to motivate us to read books in the holidays.  We wrote our name in coloured bubble writing on one side, and our favourite book character on the other.  Then we added a tassel so we could find our page easily.  It will be interesting to see if the book marks do actually encourage us to read.  We will have a vote when we get back to school in Term 3 to find out.
