Pirates versus Mermaids

The Junior production, Pirates versus Mermaids, was performed in the Picton Centre in Howick.  We had one dress rehearsal and three performances in the Centre.  Everyone did a fabulous job!

Getting Ready for our Production

There were plenty of practices, singing, dancing and face painting we prepared for our time to go on stage in the Junior School production.

They went to Room 31 as boys and came back . . . as pirates!
Dastardly pirates!
Beautiful mermaids

People with speaking parts go the 'special treatment'!

Skip Counting in Twos

The Loop the Loops used number lines and peg boards to show how they can count in multiples of two.

Kapa Haka

Several students are in the Kapa Haka group that meet on Thursday lunchtimes.  The group performed in front of the whole school in their new Kapa Haka costumes when we had our Groups and Clubs Assembly.  Year 3 performers were in the front row.

Blowing Bubbles

The Lions read Junior Journal 30 and learned how to make bubbles by following the written instructions.  The rest of the class were very envious, so we made sure that there was plenty of opportunity for everyone to have a go before school.

Arrays to Show Multiplication Facts

In Room 18, we are learning about multiplication and division.  Fighters Jets and Awesome Acrobatics made arrays to show their understanding of multiplication facts.

Here are some, but look in the Maths page for many more.

Lava Lamps

Room 18 learned about the relative density of salt, water and oil when they made lava lamps. Coloured bubbles of oil bobbed down as the salt mixed with the oil, and bobbed up as the salt dissolved in the water.  It was interesting to watch the oily lumps sink again as extra salt was added, whenever they made it back up to the surface.

Cross Country

Cross Country was held on the sports field at Howick College again this year.  It was earlier in the year in 2017, so luckily the ground was not too muddy.  Everyone finished the course in a good time, and cheered the other year groups on when they were spectating

Year 3 competitors arrive at the venue.

Year 3 girls assemble at the start line . . .

. . . and they're off!

The Howick College goal posts made a great finishing spot.

Year 3 boys looking very confident.

Mothers Day Cards

As a special surprise, we wrote stories about our mums for Mothers Day.  We also made Mothers Day cards and glued our published stories inside.  We found all the instructions on how to make the oragami flowers for our cards in Junior Journal 37.

Cockle Bay goes to Auckland Zoo

Animals going to zoo

Class favourite at zoo

Another class favourite

Outdoor classroom - learning about giraffes
On Wednesday, 3 May the entire school went to the Auckland Zoo.  We all had time to explore the zoo in small groups, but later Room 18 came together to learn about meerkats and giraffes.  Finn was a model meerkat!  It was unusual to sit in an outdoor classroom with the animals all around us.

Reflecting on Term 1

We used a PMI chart to brainstorm what we liked, what we didn't like and what was interesting in Term 1.  We will reflect on our learning as a class again at the end of Term 2.
