Maui and the Fish
Our last piece of Visual Art we have been doing in Room 18 has been of Maui to illustrate our re-tellings of the famous Maori myth, Maui and the Fish. You can read all our narratives on the Writing page, but here is a sample:

Maui and the Fish
In Room 18, we have been learning about myths and fairy tales. We are doing plays about Little Red Riding Hood and re-telling the Maori myth, Maui and the Fish. We have been tracing and painting pictures of Maui to illustrate the re-telling of the myth we have been doing in Writing.

Weka Open Morning - Writing Workshop
The Weka Team had an Open Morning in week 10. We invited parents to a Writing Workshop where we wrote about our favourite toy. Everyone took part in the workshop, and then broke away to work in small groups with parents or grandparents to improve their writing. There was also time to share some of our favourite published stories from earlier in the year.

The Squirrel and the Eagle
We watched this video:
The squirrel and the eagle
Then we pretended to be the squirrel. We talked about how we would feel and what we would do. We brainstormed all the verbs we could think of that we could use in our story.
One of our goals was to use as many precise verbs as we could, the verbs that would tell the reader exactly what we were doing.
Here is one of our published stories, but you can read more on the Writing page.

Self Portraits
When we were looking through our class blog, we realised that our self portraits had not been uploaded. This is art work we did when we were learning about sketching in term 1. Underneath is the personal profile we wrote about ourselves, also from term 1.
Here is one of our self portraits. Look on the Visual Art page for many more.

Riding on a dragon
We watched the video from Pete's Dragon of a boy having a ride on a dragon's back, and then we wrote our own descriptions of what it would be like. You can watch the video again with your parents by clicking on:

Our Marvllous Mums
In May, everyone wrote a description of their Mum and attached it to their Mothers Day card. Later we illustrated our descriptions and displayed them on the wall so everyone can see how beautiful and special our mothers really are. Look in the Writing page to see all our descriptions.
Weka Team Assembly
At our Weka Team Assembly we celebrated Miranda, Ivana, Rhys, Brooke, Matthew C and Ella who have all started to link their handwriting with diagonal ligatures. They displayed their writing to the rest of the Weka Team. They have previously all attained the Basic Handwriting Certificates and can slope their handwriting smoothly and consistently. Congratulations! There are a few other students (you know who you are!) who are almost at this stage in their handwriting and will be linking very soon.

Mothers Day Cards
As a special surprise, we wrote stories about our mums for Mothers Day. We also made Mothers Day cards and glued our published stories inside. We found all the instructions on how to make the oragami flowers for our cards in Junior Journal 37.

Reading our Recounts about the Swimming Sports
We enjoyed reading our recounts about the swimming sports and looking at the illustrations - you can read everyone's story on the Writing page.

Rocking Horse Cards
The Tigers read Junior Journal 25 and then they followed the instructions in Making a Rocking Horse Card to make their own card. Everyone wrote a message inside to someone special in their family.
Class Councillors
All Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 classes elect a class councillor and a deputy class councillor. These two people represent the class at class councillor meetings, run meetings in Room 18 to tell us what is happening, and help the school in other ways.
Everyone in Room 18 wrote a speech explaining how they would be a good class councillor and why people should vote for them. When the speeches were finished, people who wanted to could read their speech to the class.
After that everyone voted for two people they thought would be the best class councillors in Room 18. When Mrs Bigwood counted up our secret votes, Matthew C (10 votes) and Sophie (6 votes) had the most votes so they were elected Class Councillor and Deputy Councillor.

Holiday stories
In Writing, everyone wrote and illustrated a story about the Summer holidays. When they were published, we shared them with our classmates in the senior playground. You can read them in the Writing Page (at the top of the class blog).
