Sea Week 2017

Kaupapa Moana 2017, SeaWeek, New Zealand’s annual national week about the sea, starts on Saturday 25th Feb and runs until Sunday, 5 March.

This year the theme is “Toiora te Moana – Toiora te Tangata – Healthy Seas, Healthy People”.

Cockle Bay families might be interested in this Seaweek activity right at our back door in Howick this Saturday.

Cicada Maths

We are collecting and counting all the cicada skins we can find before the end of Summer.  So far, we have 241.  This will help us learn about place value, and why the number 241 is different from other numbers with the same numerals such as 214 or 142 or 124 or 421 or 412!

Holiday stories

In Writing, everyone wrote and illustrated a story about the Summer holidays.  When they were published, we shared them with our classmates in the senior playground.  You can read them in the Writing Page (at the top of the class blog).

Valentine cards

In Literacy, we learnt about different ways to communicate without words.  We could communicate commands by using hand gestures, such as: "Come here", "Be quiet", "Stop".  We could communicate ideas using shapes or images, such as a heart for love or a cross for a hospital.

Everyone in Room 18 made a heart shaped card to give as a Valentine's card to someone they love.

Birthday Statistics

As part of the 'Maths About Me' theme, we made a pictogram to show everyone's birthday month.  Then we transferred the data on to a bar graph in our theme books and wrote statements about it.

Room 18 students as illustrators

After we had finished writing,  we illustrated our holiday stories with art work which showed an important aspect we had written about.  When these are published, you will be able to read them on the Writing page.

Writing about our Summer holidays

Everyone had something exciting to write about when we shared our summer holidays experiences.
